Ixchel Goddess in Isla Mujeres
Among the Maya of the Yucatan peninsula deities, Ixchel is the Goddess of love, fertility and childbirth, the moon, and water; she represents the weaver and is known as the Goddess of the Rainbow. She was worshipped among the Maya of the Yucatan peninsula. You can find several of her temples around different Maya territories. One of them is located on Isla Mujeres, Mexico.
After Chichén Itzá, Isla Mujeres is thought to have been the second-most important pilgrimage site in all of the Yucatán Peninsula, with a history dating back over 1500 years. Legend has it that the island was a sanctuary for the Goddess and the only inhabitants were the priestess of Ixchel and her court of women. Scattered around were numerous gold, silver, and clay statues of Ixchel, and so the island got its name: Isla Mujeres, the Island of Women. The Isla remained a sanctuary until 1517 when it was discovered by Francisco Fernández de Córdoba.
